Chinese-American Soprano Veronica Mak, based in New York City, is equally passionate and fulfilled in the fields of operatic, choral, and contemporary repertoire.
During her 2023/2024 season, Ms. Mak made her role debut as Gilda in Regina Opera's production of Rigoletto. Ms. Mak's performance of the late production "appeared to inhabit the character believably" (Opera Wire). Veronica also made her company debut with Garden State Opera and role debut as Bastienne for their production of Bastien und Bastienne. Ms. Mak was a selected participant for The Thirteen Vocal Fellows Program, a vocal fellowship providing mentorship and prominent music-making environment. Veronica was later featured as the Soprano Soloist of Schubert Mass No. 2 in G for Stamford Chorale's 75th Anniversary Concert. Ms. Mak concluded her season with participating at the Grant Park Music Festival Vocal Fellowship as the Soprano Vocal Fellow in June.
During her 2022/2023 season, Veronica made her company debut with Regina Opera (Brooklyn, NY) as Monica from The Medium. She was also invited to perform a series of concerts through Regina Opera Company, including duets and arias from Rigoletto, Le Nozze di Figaro, and Hansel und Gretel. After her Regina Opera debut, she was featured as a soloist in Fresh Squeezed Opera's Vocal Showcase: "I just want to have a good f*cking day!"
Ms. Mak was also sang as the Soprano Soloist for New York Consortium's Big Sing event of Haydn's The Creation, an abridgment in English. Ms. Mak also founded an art song initiative in 2022 called The Modern Collective, amplifying new works of contemporary poetry through various styles of music. The initiative is currently on hiatus until further notice.
Ms. Mak's additional previous operatic roles also include Lauretta from Gianni Schicchi, the title role of L’enfant et les sortilèges, and Nancy from Albert Herring. Throughout her collegiate studies, she has also studied scenes from Idomeneo as Ilia and Elettra, Street Scene as Rose Maurrant, L’incoronazione di Poppea as Damigella, Hansel und Gretel as Gretel, Die Zauberflöte as Zweite Knabe and Papagena, Candide as Cunegonde, and Le Nozze di Figaro as Susanna. Ms. Mak has also sung various concert solo repertoire, including Mozart Requiem and Brahms’ Deutsches Requiem.
Ms. Mak has also participated in masterclasses with Mikael Eliasen, Warren Jones, Matthew Rose, Bryan Wagorn, Carlos Kalmar, Jonathan Beyer, Susan Platts, and Justin Moniz.
Outside of her solo engagements, Veronica is a recurring ensemble member of EnsembleNYC, under the direction of Ronnie Oliver Jr. She is also a regular cantor at St. Joseph's in Greenwich Village in New York City.
Ms. Mak received her Masters of Music & Bachelor of Music degrees from the Manhattan School of Music for Classical Voice/Opera, where she was the recipient of the Margaret Hoswell van Der Marck Scholarship in Opera.
